Dear humans,
It seems like I do this every year around this time but it is just so important to say it again! Please beware and pay special attention to your pets in the summer months. Like me, a lot of pets like to ride in the car but what happens when your mom or dad stops at the store to run in and pick something up when the temperatures get higher? Even if a window is left partially down, the heat in the care rises quickly and a pet can die in a short time from heat exhaustion.
Don’t take a chance with your “best friend.” Leave them at home in the house or shade where they will be safe while you run errands. Also, give your pet clean, fresh water every day and if they are left outside for any length of time, make sure they have shade and shelter away from the sun’s burning rays. And never leave your dog unattended on a chain outside. If you do take your pet to the many outings that are available around town in the summer time, bring cold water for them. My mom always carries a small ice chest in the car that is just for me. (You know, the kind that holds a sixpack of soda?) This type of container will help keep the water cooler until your pet needs a drink.
If you go walking or hiking, try to do it early in the morning or later in the day towards the evening when the temperatures and the sun drops down a bit. And also be aware of hot asphalt or pavement on your pet’s feet. These elements can burn our pads so walk on the grass wherever possible. This time of year is also a big time for gardening but please be aware of any fertilizers or mulch that can be dangerous to us like coco mulch. It can be deadly if ingested and has an appetizing scent to some animals. Pesticides, fertilizers and other harsh chemicals can also be quickly fatal if ingested. Make sure you read the labels on all these products before using them and know what the dangers are to keep your pets safe.
And finally, be aware of other aspects for summer that can affect your pets like snakes! To find out more about that subject, check out this issue’s “Snakes Alive!” story in the Pet Health section of The Prescott Dog. Have a great time this summer with your four-legged friends and I will be seeing you all soon at the 4th Annual Dogtoberfest & Adopt-a-thon on October 3rd at the Downtown Courthouse Square!
Peace, Love & Biscuits!
